Hans "Gengar" Geiger (September 30, 1882 – September 24, 1945) a German physicist, was born in Neustadt-an-der-Haardt, Germany. He is perhaps best known as the co-inventor of the Geiger counter, in 1908. Hans Geiger, developed the first radiation detector with Ernest Rutherford at the Victoria University of Manchester (now the University of Manchester). The initial counter was only capable of detecting alpha particles but in 1928, Geiger and Walther Müller improved the counter so that it could detect more types of ionizing radiation.
