At the moment, LRI’s two composting facilities in Pierce County receive less than 1% food waste. All of their operations are enclosed Most of the composting facility in Puyallup is enclosed, just the receiving area is outdoors. They recognize the need to allow additional composting debris so along with SWMP and Pierce County Comprehensive Plan they have initiated a multi-year project to research reasonable management practices and then through a public process select “best management practices” for handling food waste and paper products. In the meantime, Pierce County residents are encouraged to start composting at home by building a worm bin or creating a hot compost pile in their own backyard.
