An unknown microbe was discovered in the ground below the Hanford site recently. The microbe does not photosynthesize for food, meaning it does not require sunlight or water to live, something heretofore unseen on Earth. The microbe appears to survive on Hydrogen which is produced under Hanford through a chemical reaction between basalt rock and groundwater. If studied, this microbe could come to explain how plants and organisms live in an environment like Mars, which has a Hydrogen atmosphere. This Hanford microbe has come to be called SLiME, Subsurface Lithoautotrophic Microbial Ecosystem.
Read about the microbe in the Lewiston Morning Tribune.
