The first nuclear reactor of its kind, the N Reactor, which began construction in 1959, was designed for the dual purpose of generating steam for electricity as well as producing plutonium for atomic weapons. The N Reactor saw the dawn of a nuclear powered United States, as well as the first use of nuclear energy for non weapons uses. The reactor continued working even after 1971, when all other Hanford reactors had been shut down. It ran until 1987 when it was placed on a continual standby setting; the Department of Energy retired the N Reactor in 1991, it has not run since. The importance of the N Reactor to the United States was recognized by President Kennedy in 1963.
