A recent study at Hanford has foudn that the current "pump and treat" system in use at Hanford to clean groundwater of toxic chemicals has not been performing well enough. The current system pump groundwater out of the ground, treats it to remove toxic chemicals, and returns the water to the ground. However, studies are finding that not all of the hazardous chemicals are being removed. Therefore, "treated" groundwater may be making its way to the Columbia River where it can threaten the aquatic life, including salmon.
