Hanford downwinders filed a lawsuit seeking $100 billion from nuclear contractors they say share responsibility for radioactive releases that gave them thyroid cancers and other illnesses. The new case alleges DuPont and other contractors denied residents' civil rights by not informing them they could be harmed by secret radiation releases at Hanford between 1945 and 1960. U.S. District Judge Alan McDonald dismissed previous downwinders' cases saying he would consider claims only for people who had certain types of cancer or who could prove their risk of contracting cancer was doubled by exposure to specific doses of radiation. The new suit identifies 22 causes of action, including numerous constitutional violations, negligence, trespassing on property through airborne radiation particles and fraud.
