  • 1820 - The tomato was publicly proven to be a safe food after Robert Johnson ate a bushel (24 kg) of tomatoes in Salem, Massachusetts.
  • 1994 - The U.S. General Accounting Office issued a report which stated that between 1940 and 1974, DOD and other national security agencies studied "hundreds, perhaps thousands" of weapons tests and experiments involving hazardous substances (see Skull Valley).
  • 2005 - Dr. Leo Sternbach died on this day - invented the benzodiazepine, a class of tranquilizers including librium and valium, in 1956.
