Overview
![]()
Nicotine is one of the most potent, toxic, and readily available drugs today. The history of tobacco use dates back over two millennia; its psychoactive and medicinal properties were discovered by indigenous peoples of the Americas. Nicotine is highly toxic, with only 60 mg potentially deadly to an adult. On March 21, 2000, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the US Food and Drug Administration did not have the authority to regulate tobacco. On June 22, 2009, President Obama signed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, landmark legislation that gives the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate the manufacturing and marketing of tobacco.
