  • 1794 - Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier guillotined today, the "father of modern chemistry", a French nobleman prominent in the histories of chemistry and biology. He found and termed both oxygen (1778) and hydrogen (1783), helped construct the metric system.
  • 2011 - Corwin Herman Hansch died an Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at Pomona College in California. He became known as the 'father of computer-assisted molecule design.'
