  • 1884 - Gregor Johann Mendel died today 1884 - a German-speaking Moravian scientist and Augustinian friar who gained posthumous fame as the founder of the modern science of genetics.
  • 2005 - Graniteville train crash occurred today 2005 when Train No. 192, which was transporting chlorine gas, sodium hydroxide and cresol, crashed releasing about 60 tons of the gas. Nine people died and at least 250 people were treated for chlorine exposure.
