  • 1745 - Benjamin Rush, born today, a physician, writer, educator, and humanitarian, published the first American chemistry textbook. Rush was also the founder of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and a signer of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
  • 2008 - The U.S. Army destroyed the last chemical weapon filled with VX nerve agent at the Anniston Army Depot (Army Ordnance Depot in northeast Alabama), eliminating a total of about 293,000 gallons of VX and another nerve agent, sarin.
