  • Children more likely to have attention, behavioral problems when exposed to phthalates in womb, New York study says. Children exposed in the womb to chemicals in cosmetics and fragrances are more likely to develop behavioral problems commonly found in children with attention deficit disorders, according to a study of New York City school-age children published Thursday. • Deadline pressure at Hanford to remove radioactive waste. Hanford will have to pump radioactive wastes out of underground tanks at a rate of 10 super-huge tanks in slightly less than five years to meet a proposed new cleanup deadline. So far, Hanford has averaged about one tank a year. Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Washington. http://www.seattlepi.com/local/414774_hanford29.html
  • Study: Mercury in canned tuna high. More than half of canned tuna samples from a local grocery store failed to meet the strict Environmental Protection Agency safety level for mercury in fish, according to a new study by University of Nevada, Las Vegas researchers. • Another look at Atrazine. One of the most widely used herbicides in the U.S., Atrazine, is being reevaluated by the EPA. Some scientists say the weed killer negatively impacts the environment and human health. But Atrazine's parent company Syngenta stands behind its product. • Scientists link flame retardants and reduced human fertility. Women exposed to high levels of flame retardants take substantially longer to get pregnant, indicating for the first time that the widespread chemicals may affect human fertility, according to a study published Tuesday. Epidemiologists from the University of California at Berkeley studied 223 pregnant women in California's Salinas Valley, an agricultural community with predominantly low-income, Mexican immigrants. More than 97 percent of the women had PBDEs in their blood, and those with high levels were half as likely to conceive in any given month as the women with low levels. • Exposure to very low concentrations of the plasticizer bisphenol A (BPA) causes cellular damage and death in cultured human placenta cells, researchers report. The doses used for this study are similar to blood levels found in pregnant women. Particularly concerning was the observation that that effects were most pronounced at the lowest - rather than the highest - concentrations of BPA. • Island residents sue U.S., saying military made them sick. A decorated former Marine is now the star witness in a multibillion-dollar lawsuit by more than 7,000 residents of this Caribbean island - about three-quarters of its population - who say that what the U.S. military did on Vieques has made them sick.
